The Irony of It   1 comment

“The irony of the information age is that it has given new respectability to uninformed opinion.” — John Lawton speaking to the American Association of Broadcast Journalists

This quotation is the first line I ever put on the internet for almost-public consumption. I hoped to lend respectability to Mr. Lawton’s opinion, while simultaneously issuing the implicit promise that I would not contribute to this irony of the information age by making my own uninformed opinions available, because I agree that it’s a mess out there.

I have resisted blogging for years out of the perhaps egoistic fear that someone might read what I write and mistake it for something approximating truth. But one excellent quotation deserves another:

“Blogging: Never before have so many people with so little to say said so much to so few.” — One of those Demotivators posters

So here I am, moving from linguistic irony to situational irony, confident that nobody will read this anyway.
